PRESS RELEASE

3rd September 2006

UKSA scheme offering £50,000 to budding young sailors receives support from Sweden Yachts

The UKSA are offering financial assistance to young people to help them train for professional maritime careers. Anyone aged between 17 and 25 can apply for bursary funding as part of the UKSA’s Chichester Scholarship Scheme. The scheme aims to provide wider access to the UKSA’s professional career courses such as the Ocean Graduate Plus+, Yachting Cadetship, Professional Yacht Engineer or the Professional Instructor Training watersports course, all of which can lead to rewarding careers at sea.

Young people visiting the Southampton International Boat Show, who want to pursue a maritime career but for various reasons cannot afford the training costs, are being encouraged to visit the Sweden Yacht stand at berth 343 where more information about the bursary funding can be found.

Sweden Yachts has worked with the UKSA for a number of years now and has supplied several new yachts to the Academy’s fleet. The yachts’ high standard provides UKSA students with a high level of comfort during their professional training courses and introduces them to aspects of luxury yachting prior to entering into the industry as trained skippers or crew.

Peter Johansson of Sweden Yachts says, “We fully support the UKSA Chichester Scholarships and hope the scheme will provide a route into the industry for young people who couldn’t normally afford to do so.”

Stephen Chipperfield, UKSA Trustee, who helped formulate the scholarship scheme said: “For too many young people today, there appeared to be little alternative to seeking a career in the towns and cities of the UK, rather than the ports and oceans of the world. We recognise that this could lead to an erosion of Britain’s maritime tradition and a lost opportunity for young people with the potential to enjoy a rewarding and character-building career at sea. The UKSA Chichester Scholarship Scheme has been designed to provide wider access to such opportunities by providing financial help to deserving and disadvantaged young people for a career in professional yachting.”

More information about the UKSA Chichester Scholarships can be found at Yacht Berth 343 at the Southampton Boat Show.
