UKSA students raise over £1000 for the RNLI
On Monday 7th January 2008, students from UKSA presented Nick Kenyon of the RNLI with a cheque for £1061.95. The funds were raised by UKSA’s Marine Business Management students who were set the task of organising and managing a successful fundraising event as part of their course.
The eight-strong team chose to raise money for the RNLI’s ‘Train one, save many’ campaign and arranged an evening of entertainment at UKSA’s Arctic Road campus. The students were responsible for every aspect of the event from managing budgets, liaising with external companies and organising the catering and entertainment for the evening.
“We’re delighted to have raised so much money,” said Marine Business Management Student AJ Windsor. “We booked a popular local band – The Jones’s – to provide the music and also organised a raffle with some fantastic prizes donated by local companies including a lifejacket from Spinlock worth over £200. We persuaded Wight Vodka to sponsor the charity evening and also arranged a hog roast. Over 60 people came along on the night and we’d like to thank everyone for their support which raised over £1000 for the RNLI.”
The funds raised by the Marine Business Management Students will pay for a year’s training for an RNLI crew member. The students chose to raise money for the RNLI as they are all training for maritime careers and wanted to help the RNLI in their valuable work at sea. UKSA’s Marine Business Management course is designed to provide students with the knowledge necessary to manage a business afloat or to manage their own business in the marine industry. The unique course attracts students from all over the world, the latest course intake includes students from Hong Kong, Belgium and Germany.
