Course information

The module includes basic chart work, navigation aids, basic radar operation and plotting. A minimum of 5 days will be spent in our navigation simulator.

Examination and assessment

Successful completion of on-course assessment material will allow entry to a final written exam at the end of the module. The in-course assessment will include demonstrating competence in all aspects of basic navigation, knowledge of chart symbols and abbreviations, IALA buoyage, both A and B, and the cardinal system. The operation and setting up of: electronic navigational aids including GPS, Loran C, electronic chart systems, echo sounders and logs. Setting up and basic operation of radar and radar plotting. The written assessment will consist of a 2½ hour chart work and theory paper with pass mark set at 60% in both parts.

Pre entry requirements

Before the course you should hold yachtmaster shorebased and be a competent practical navigator.
