A one year vocational course that trains you towards becoming a watersports and activity instructor.

Pre-requisite experience:

An interview plus 3 GCSEs at grade C or above or 1 GCSE grade C or above and a Level 1 in a relevant award. Relevant experience/qualifications may be acceptable subject to interview.

Syllabus

This course concentrates on the development of the essential practical skills needed to instruct in activities. Alongside the unique opportunity to complete industry recognised qualifications, you will also gain qualifications in:

Edexcel BTEC Level 2 First Diploma in Sport and Active Leisure

  • Fitness Testing and Tracking
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
  • Anatomy and Physiology on Sport

Edexcel BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Sailing and Watersports

  • Practical Sailing Skills
  • Injury in Sport
  • Leading Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

Together with these mandatory units, you will also complete an additional 4 optional units that suit your interests and abilities.

How will I learn?

Attendance will be 4 days per week. The Marine Industry Leadership course is a mixture of theory and practical based learning and requires you to take ownership of your own work and course success. You will work towards completing a series of practical, written, research and presentation tasks for each unit. Each unit will be marked used a Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria.

What can this lead to?

Typical employment prospects include working within small or large providers of outdoor activity both in the UK and overseas. Students also have the option to progress onto Level 3 qualifications in Sport, Leisure Management or Sports Development. Students will be enrolled with UKSA’s dedicated career guidance department with a large number of companies recruiting direct.

Additional information

Students are expected to contribute up to £50 for the cost of various logbooks and uniform. You may also require some specialist clothing and footwear (although not essential).

Funding information

If you are between 16 and 19 years of age on 1 September in the year you begin your studies your tuition and qualification fee is free, provided you are a resident of the UK or European Community for three years (not on a student visa).

If you are aged 19 or over on 1 September in the year you begin your studies you are responsible for the payment of tuition, qualification fees and course expenses (see exceptions below).

Level 2 and Level 3 Entitlement

If you are aged 19 or over but without a full Level 2 (equivalent or higher), or between 19 and 25 without a full Level 3 (equivalent or higher) qualification, then you may not have to pay for your tuition fees. Adult Learning Grant

For students 19 and over studying for their first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification, the Adult Learning Grant is a means-tested allowance of up to £30 per week. For further information and eligibility please contact the IW College on 01983 550638.
