Overview
The Foundation Degree in Yacht Science will be delivered in conjunction with Falmouth Marine College and University of Plymouth. A limited number of places are available as an additional element for students embarking on the UKSA Yachting Cadetship programmes.
What is a Foundation Degree?
Foundation Degrees are innovative University accredited degrees that were introduced to the Higher Education sector in 2001. They are designed and delivered in partnership with employers to equip people with the relevant knowledge and skills for specific industries. Designed for learning within the workplace, Foundation Degrees use the full benefits of blended learning, incorporating learning in the work place, classroom teaching, research, and distance learning.
Entry requirements
Suitable for students embarking on UKSA Yachting Cadetship. To study for a Foundation Degree students will require the usual criteria for entry to Foundation Degrees, including education to A level standard or equivalent work place learning. Students should be 18 years or over.
Foundation Degree training modules will include:

- Yacht operations
- Navigation and meteorology
- Ocean passage planning and weather systems
- Communications at sea
- Marine engineering
- Marine engine systems
- Work based learning and practice
- Leadership and management
- Sponsorship and marketing
- Small ships business
- Professional development
- Yacht construction and design
- Fitness and nutrition
Qualifications:
In addition to the qualifications achieved within the Academy’s Yachting Cadetship, successful candidates will gain the following FdSc Operational Yacht Science
Further study
Honours Degree
Students have the option to enhance their qualification to an Honours Degree. Following successful completion of the Foundation Degree, students will be given the opportunity (at an additional cost) to attend the University of Plymouth for one year of academic study.
On successful completion they will be awarded a full Honours Degree [BSc (Hons) Marine Studies (Ocean Yachting)]
