Essential Marine Hospitality

Knowledge of sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails

• Sufficient knowledge to understand orders given concerning the sailing and day-to-day running of the boat

Sail handling

• Bending on, setting, reefing and handling of sails
• Use of sheets and halyards and their associated bollards

Ropework

• Handling ropes, including coiling, stowing, securing to cleats and single and double bollards
• Handling warps
• Ability to tie the following knots and to understand their correct use; figure of eight, clove hitch, rolling hitch, bowline, round turn and two half hitches, single and double sheet bend, reef knot

Fenders

• Learn the various ways of tying them on
• Different knots including quick release
• The use of a 'wandering fender'

Fire precautions and fighting

• Awareness of the hazards of fire and the precautions necessary to prevent fire
• Knowledge of the action to be taken in the event of a fire

Personal safety equipment

• Understand and comply with the rules for the wearing of safety harnesses, lifejackets and personal buoyancy aids

Man overboard

•  Understand the action to be taken to recover a man overboard

Emergency equipment

• Operate distress flares and know when they should be used
• Understand how to launch and board a liferaft

Manners and customs

• Understand accepted practice with regard to; the use of burgees and ensigns, prevention of unnecessary noise or disturbance in harbour including courtesies to other berthed craft
• Awareness of the responsibility of yacht skippers to protect the environment

Rules of the road

• Ability to keep a lookout at sea

Dinghies

• Understand and comply with loading rules
• Ability to handle a dinghy under oars

Meteorology

• Awareness of forecasting services and knowledge of the Beaufort scale

Seasickness

• What is it?
• Tell-tale signs
• How to avoid it
• How to overcome it when you are suffering
• How to care for others effectively

Helmsmanship

• Understand the basic principles of sailing and steer and trim sails on all points of sail
• Steer a compass course, under sail and power

General Duties

• Carry out general duties satisfactorily on and below decks in connection with the daily routine of the vessel

• Food provisioning, preparation and storage on yachts.
• Identification of meats and fish for provisioning.
• Learn how to make a substantial selection of seafood dishes.
• Ideas for simple but mouth watering desserts, with practical sessions.
• Learn how to cook steaks to different requirements, with sauces to accompany.
• Menu planning and provisioning – stowage/packing hazards/international regulations/dietary requirements.
• Provisioning / cooking to budget.
• Introduction to local produce.
• Essential food hygiene, food prep and handling.
• Practical sessions making canapés and salads.
• Other useful skills – bread making, carving a joint, jointing a chicken, barbeque techniques, galley equipment identification.
• Group mini project preparing and cooking breakfast and dinner onboard a yacht.

RYA Short Range Radio

This one-day course is a mixture of theory and practical sessions. The course introduces you to the use of a marine VHF radio equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) facility. The course aims to give you the knowledge and confidence to communicate effectively on a VHF radio and covers everything from basic controls to making Mayday distress calls. You should prepare for this course by learning the phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta etc.)

RYA Powerboat Level 2

This two-day course will teach you safe driving and handling skills for small motor craft. The course covers theory and practical work including launching and recovery, boat handling under way (including high speed), anchoring, coming alongside, man overboard, disabled craft, leaving and returning to pontoons, basic navigation, collision prevention regulations, boat design engines and drives.

STCW95 Basic Training, comprising of the following modules:

MCA Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

This one-day theory-based course gives basic induction training in safety procedures and accident prevention, familiarising new seafarers with employment and working conditions aboard.

MCA Elementary First Aid

A training course for seafarers which gives an understanding and basic competence in immediate lifesaving and first aid skills.

MCA Personal Survival Techniques

This course covers the types and use of survival equipment, survival theory, preparation for survival and search and rescue. This course is part theory, and part practical accident simulation in the pool.

MCA Basic Firefighting and Fire Prevention

This three-day course deals with the precautions to be taken to minimise the risk of fires aboard ship, the way in which fires are caused and the first means of extinguishing them. The course includes practical training in the use of fire fighting equipment, and the use of breathing apparatus for fire fighting and rescue. This course will take place at UKSA for the first day and in Ryde on the Isle of Wight for the remaining two days.

Notes

1. This course is very physical. You will be wearing a full set of heat resistant clothing including a thick balaclava. By the end of the day you will be covered it dust and soot, so please bring a complete change of clothes for each day of the course. CAUTION - This course contains some exercises that are physically demanding. Any candidate unsure of their fitness for such activities should consult their GP.
