Preparation and qualification for sailing commercial vessels under 24m for employment opportunities in flotilla, charter, deliveries and instruction.
Course overview
The Commercial Yachtmaster course provides the training, practical experience and preparation for gaining a commercially endorsed RYA / MCA Yachtmaster (Offshore) certificate. Successful graduates are able to work on a variety of sailing yachts, including charter skipper, flotilla skipper or corporate day sailing.
The yachtmaster course provides a fast and effective way to enter the industry on vessels under 24m. It is also suitable for those looking to gain their RYA Yachtmaster with a view to skippering their own family yacht.

Skippering your own yacht, working with charter or flotilla companies, short haul deliveries, or teaching yachting if combined with a RYA Cruising Instructor course.

Syllabus
Practical sailing:
- 60 days afloat
- Minimum of 2,500 tidal miles practical experience in our extensive yacht fleet
- Close-quarters handling under power and sail
- Skippering and command skills
- Pilotage by day and night
- Sail setting
- Meteorology
Shore based training:
- RYA Dayskipper Theory
- RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Theory
- Sea Survival
- First Aid
- Diesel Engine Maintenance
Navigation and electronic aids:
- RYA Radar training, enhanced by the use of UKSA’s TRANSAS training suite
- Use of other navigational aids including GPS, log, depth and electronic charts
Please notes:
- Please note: this programme does not include STCW95 basic training, and is not suited to people wanting to work on commercial Superyachts. Those interested in such a career path should consider Crew Training, Ocean Graduate, Cadetship, or Motor Yacht Skipper Training

A number of bolt on training modules are available for those choosing the Commercial Yachtmaster.
- Yachting Orientation - build mileage and experience before starting the course.
- MCA Approved Engine Course - provides a thorough understanding of larger marine installations and to undertake full servicing, fault finding and diagnosis procedures
- RYA Cruising Instructor - qualify to teach Competent Crew and Dayskipper courses for RYA sailing schools.
