Course overview
A course in celestial navigation, world wide meteorology and voyage planning. The course is suitable for competent navigators planning an ocean passage, or those just interested in offshore navigation techniques.
The Ocean theory course includes an introduction to the principles of celestial navigation, practical use of the sextant, measurement of time, position fixing by sun and stars, compass checking and great circle sailing. World-wide meteorology, including tropical revolving storms, and passage planning for ocean voyaging are also included. At the end of the course you will understand the theory of astro navigation, and be able to fix position using sun, moon and star sights.
It is not essential to study before the course, however you may find a little knowledge helpful. We recommend Celestial Navigation by Tom Cunliffe, available from the UKSA Shop.
