Big Boat 1 Race Report

The Raymarine Warsash Spring Series 2008 kicked off to a great start on the first day beautifully cold British weather and a Northerly offshore breeze blowing enough to keep both tacticians and crew on their toes. It was the first race of the series and the first time on the boat with that exact crew, the racing was bound to be interesting. However the inexperienced crew held their own and we managed to achieve three out of four starts hitting the line with speed and heading in the right direction.

The shifty winds and strong tides gave the tacticians a lot to think about but they pulled through and we rounded everyone windward in the top 3, granted we were the 3rd biggest boat there. Unfortunately we couldn’t hold our own downwind and lost a lot of time on each leg. However this was not a reflection of crew work but more due to the fact that our spinnaker of preference had ripped earlier that morning.

I can assure you that trimmers were making the grinders sweat and tacticians were keeping the bow men busy. Even though overall we finished mid fleet, the racing showed that with a few more one presenters from the crew and the right spinnaker we could achieve the results that we strive for.
