UKSA's Impeccable Safety Record

Safety is of paramount importance to us, and the Academy has an exemplary record in this respect. We're proud of the level of safety within the organisation, but never complacent. We work hard to ensure best practice is followed across the board at all times and welcome inspections from external authorities. These include regular visits by government experts from the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA), the National Governing Bodies of every discipline we cover and by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Safety on and off the water

At UKSA we are set up to provide a safe and secure learning environment for all our visitors.

  • We provide personal buoyancy in the form of a buoyancy aid or inflatable lifejacket, which is worn at all times by absolutely everyone going afloat. Instructors check that students have this properly fitted before each water-based session. For some of our sports we also wear light and comfortable helmets.

  • With a safety net provided through 18 professional rescue craft, instructional staff can get all students into rescue craft, each manned by a fully qualified first aider and equipped with a comprehensive first aid kit and flares.

  • All UKSA lead instructors carry marine VHF ship-shore radios, enabling constant two-way contact with our base ashore, as well as providing direct and immediate contact with the coastguard should it be necessary.

  • Safe, contained and secure campus area with CCTV camera network for security. Self-contained dormitories ensure each group has secure accommodation with a unique access code.

Quality of staff

The Academy's biggest asset is its staff - as well as a high level of qualifications across multiple disciplines, you'll find us polite, efficient, professional and enthusiastic at all times. This starts with your initial contact with us, but it can only be truly quantified by visiting us. Please contact us for details of free weekends for leaders of potential groups.

Catering facilities

Our on-site dining facilities will provide on-shore meals and packed lunches for activities afloat. We always offer a choice of dishes, including a vegetarian option and can cater for a wide variety of specialist diets on request including kosher, halal, dairy free, gluten free and vegan.
